5/2003:AT THIS TIME 'HEART' IS UNDERGOING EXTENSIVE REFITTING AND REPOWERING WITH A YANMAR 27HP DIESEL. SHOULD BE SAILING BY AUGUST.
THE 80 FOOT 'LAISSEZ-FAIRE' IS STILL MOSTLY A GLEAM IN HER PAPA'S EYE, THOUGH I HAVE CHOSEN A MARINE ARCHITECT AND KNOW THE PARTICULARS RE COSTS. IF I GET THE DESIGNER'S FEE OF $55,000 AND A STERLING PROBABILITY OF $1.75 MILLION THEN I'LL GET IT DONE
HOWEVER, A 60 FOOT ARDEN SHOULD BE CONSIDERABLY CHEAPER, IF I CAN FIND ONE FOR SALE.
'HEART' IS NOW IN SAUSALITO AT LIST MARINE, AWAITING THE NEW ENGINE. 'HEART' IS OTHERWISE RIGGED AND READY-TO-GO; LOOKING GOOD!

6/21/2003 I drove 'HEART' to Emery Cove where we had arranged for a berth, where 'HEART' presently lies undergoing evolution of running rigging and safety-systems, general clean-up and seaworthiness review.

7/12/2003 STEPHANIE, MY SPOUSE, DAVID, SON, AND I
SAILED 'HEART' EMERY COVE-TREASURE ISLAND-ANGEL
ISLAND IN ABOUT 4 HOURS, ENCOUNTERING 20-25 KNOTS
OF WIND AND REGISTERING 7.5 KTS. BOAT SPEED WITH
SINGLE REEFED MAIN,CUTTER STAYSAIL AND JIB.
A+ DAY!

7/19/2003 MICHAEL, MY ELDEST SON, AND I SAILED
'HEART' EMERY-TREASURE-ANGEL-CHAUNCEY PT. IN 3 HRS
WITH 20-30 KTS WIND AND 40 KT DOWNDRAFTS AT ANGEL
MARKING 8.6 KTS BOAT SPEED WITH FULL MAIN AND
WRKG JIB. PICTURES SOON!

8/09/2003 Stephanie sailed 'Heart' Angel-round Treasure/Yerba Buena-Emery in 3.5 hrs., double reefed main and working jib 3-6 knts, 10 to 20 knts of wind; Yanmar diesel excellent. Gotta get back for 'niners'.

9/06/2003 Stephanie and I sailed 'Heart' Pier 39-
Alcatraz- 'under the Gate' in the last hour of an ebb tide in 10 to 20 knts of wind with rare gusts of 25, done in about 6 hours.

9/16/2003 Michael and I motored 'Heart' to north
point of Treasure Island as wind finally became established at 10 to 20 knts WEST, traffic at Pier 39, back to Cove; comfortable sailing with
late speed.

9/20/2003 Stephanie and I sailed Alcatraz-Treasure, sharing the bay with Alinghi and Oracle. Occupied same 30 square meters with Oracle for a few minutes.

10/18/03 Running lights, anchoring,cabin and utility
lights are now operating; radar is ready to be
wired to power; giving first float concert.

11/01/03 Stephanie and I sailed "HEART" around
Angel Island in about 6 hours; 10-20 knts wind,
cool temps. time for some meditations, recollections etc.

11/27/03 John made his first solo voyage in 4 years: Emery to Red Rock @ San Rafael Bridge;18 nm
round trip and a view of San Quentin; and back in 5 hours; 5 to 15 kts of wind

11/29/03 John and Stephanie motor-sailed on
Pier 39 recon for 4 hours, with dodg-em vs tour boats

01/31/2003 John and his psycho-epistemolog sailed
'HEART' thru light airs until 1 nm west of the
Golden Gate 15 knots filled in from the southwest,
backing to 20 to 35 westerly. That being the
direction of the prevailing 10-12 foot swell, I
was in my first small gale at sea (.5 nm west of
Bonita Point); understand, I had full main and
working jib (110%), newly self-repaired spreaders
and only log as crew. As the little ship
descended to the trough between swells, the Golden
Gate disappearing from view, I calmly reasoned:
>this is no place for error, for this is the
domain of the Great White, and forty fathoms on a
deadman's chest<. Well, I sailed back through the
Gate and finished the voyage in wind light to
breathless.

2/7/2004 Stephanie and I sailed 'Heart'-Angel-
Treasure, cool to warm ambience; summer approaching

2/14/04 John sailed solo in 5-10 kts NNW, panorama
from stern rail exactly what I had imagined when
I conceived of sunflower yellow deck contrasting
with blue-green water, blue sky, sun over my left
shoulder, towering cloud of sail and wooded hills of Sausalito in the distance.

3/20/04 Stephanie and John sailed to Treasure Is.
in 10 kt breeze, to within 2 nm of Red Rock/San
Mateo Bridge, becalmed, almost took sails in to motor, fog ushered in 20 to 30 kt WSW wind for
many sailboats, running-reaching at 8+ kts,
great Bay rodeo; hove-to just off Emeryville,
furled sails, fired up the Yanmar and motored in.

03/27/2004 John soloed under cold gray skies past
Golden Gate, trying Genoa. Acceptable, though no
racing changes, still the sheeting configuration
works, is powerful and easiy accomodates working
jib sheeting at corrected direction of
force vector. Sun came out for last half of 6-hour
trial.

04/03/04 Stephanie and John motor sailed out to Yerba Buena Light and back in a couple of hours. Bright sun, Bay Bridge HUMMM, HMPH!

04/18/2004 List Marine completed the service of
the Yanmar diesel after 50 hrs. of use. 'HEART'
is ready to extend her range...
